  1. Consult the website of your phone’s manufacturer for any cleaning instructions or
    recommendations.
    • Apple advises that disinfectant wipes, Clorox sheets, and others with similar concentrations can be used on their devices.
    • Samsung recommends applying a 70% alcohol-based solution (ethanol or isopropyl) to a microfiber cloth.
  2. Unplug power sources and cables. Then, turn off your phone and take it out of its case.
  3. Wipe your phone with a lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with water and soap or a hand rub or disinfectant wipes with 70% alcohol.
    • Ensure that any openings or ports will not get wet.
  4. Let your phone dry for at least five minutes.
  5. Wipe your phone with a dry lint-free microfiber cloth.
  6. Clean the case of your phone using the same process.

When to Clean Your Phone

  • Every day
  • If you, or someone near you, coughed or sneezed
  • If you placed your phone somewhere in a public place
  • If someone has held your phone
  • If your phone is visibly dirty
  • If you suspect that your phone has been contaminated

More Tips on Cleaning Your Phone

  • Wash the cleaning cloths immediately after cleaning your phone.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 to 30 seconds or use a hand rub with 70% alcohol:
    • Before and after cleaning:
      • Your phone
      • The phone’s case
      • The cleaning cloths (if applicable)
    • Regularly so as not to pass germs back to your phone
  • Avoid excessive wiping of your phone because doing so can damage its screen, ports, and even interior electronics.
  • Do not use other materials or experiment with any cleaning solutions not mentioned here.
  • Do not use your phone in public places and in the bathroom.
  • If you are relying on your phone when cooking, print out recipes to avoid cross contamination between the phone and kitchen surfaces.
